The Jabberwocky (July 2012)

Last summer, just before we had Benjamin, we went and bought all of Alex's school books. One of the books was a large book of poetry called The Harp and Laurel Wreath that he will use through 5th grade, so it includes more advanced poetry as well as simple poetry. At his school, they have to memorize and recite one poem per week. Joseph loves poetry and so was looking through the book and found one of his favorite poems, The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. For those who know this poem or have heard it, it is definitely not one a kindergartner would memorize . . . maybe by 4th grade?? I don't know. Anyway, true to form, Joseph made the poem super fun for the kids and Alex particularly fell in love with it. So much so that he determined to memorize it . . . and so he did . . . in just a couple of weeks no less. Language has always been is strong point, but this really surprised me because it is a poem made almost entirely of nonsense words that you don't know what they mean . . . but then you do the more you hear the poem. It's a fun one. Here he is in two different videos reciting it for us.
